Monday Morning Encouragement for Preachers

This is intended to encourage those of you who preached yesterday (and for those of you who listened to someone preach yesterday, here's some insight into how we preachers often feel...and how you can pray for us).
Few preachers who preach God's Word feel great when the sermon's done. I'm usually thinking about everything I didn't have time to say or even a few things I did say that I wish I hadn't.  Then the time for the benediction slips up on me, I give it, and then I sneak to the back door to talk with people as they walk out. Sometimes people come to talk, and I'm humbled and encouraged by the ways they say the Lord used the sermon in their lives. Other times no one says much of anything, which bothers me more than I wish it did.

But the immediate feedback - as much as we crave the instant gratification - isn't the point. A pastorate is made up of a lot of sermons, and the fact is, most of those sermons are going to be singles rather than triples or home runs. But that's fine. If the Lord is so kind as to give you even a long string of singles, that's purely of His grace, and your congregation will benefit and grow from that. You score runs with a string of singles. So don't worry if you haven't hit a home run in a while - and if you hit one today, don't get cocky! Either way, go home, rest, thank God for the grace He gave you to teach and encourage His people again, take some time off, and then start the whole process over the next week. Our God is a good God, and week after week, sermon after sermon, He will give grace and strength and insight to the men who preach His Word.

Thinking Rightly about Evangelism

"We do not fail in our evangelism if we faithfully tell the gospel to someone who is not subsequently converted; we fail only if we do not faithfully tell the gospel at all."

--Mark Dever, The Gospel and Personal Evangelism

Congregationally Shaped Christians

"Most evangelical Christians today seem to treat their church as one more thing to help out their Christian life, perhaps along with this Bible study, that music, those authors, this retreat, and keeping a journal. In other words, the Christian conceives of his or her spiritual life as fundamentally one's own business, managed by selecting among various helps. This approach contrasts with an older and more biblical way of thinking about the Christian life that is congregationally shaped, where the demands of the gospel are made concrete in a particular local church."

The Church Is the Gospel Made Visible

"Christian proclamation might make the gospel audible, but Christians living together in local congregations make the gospel visible (see John 13:34-35). The church is the gospel made visible."

--Mark Dever, "The Church," in A Theology for the Church, Daniel Akin, ed.

The Era of the Ear, Not the Eye

"People say this is a visual age. Every age is a visual age. We are made to crave the immediacy of sight. We naturally desire to see God immediately, but that blessing was taken from us at the fall. We live in salvation history in the era, not of the eye, but of the ear. One day that glorious immediacy of seeing God will be restored to us - that is the climax of the Bible! That is the consummation we find in Revelation 22:4 - we shall see God!"

The Way God Works

"God's Word has always been His chosen instrument to create, convict, convert, and conform His people....The way God works is through the agency of His Word."

Two Quotes to Caution Against Misguided Methodology

Many churches' strategies and methods for outreach are well-intentioned but often misguided. Here are two quotes that caution against such misguided methodology.
What you win them with is what you'll keep them with.
(Mark Dever)

If reaching people "where they are" appears to endorse "where they are," then it is the most significant strategic error the church can possibly make....When the church approaches an individual as a consumer to be pleased, rather than as a recalcitrant sinner to be rescued, the church is no longer doing what it is called to do. Dever on The Trellis and the Vine

Above is a video of Mark Dever promoting Colin Marshal and Tony Payne's new book, The Trellis and the Vine: The Ministry Mind-Shift That Changes Everything.

And here's what folks are saying about it:

"This is the best book I've read on the nature of church ministry" - Mark Dever

"...a simple, beautiful book that I plan to have every pastor and elder at The Village Church read ... a book desperately needed among large churches in the West" - Matt Chandler

"...takes us right to the heart of authentic Christian ministry" - William Taylor

"My advice: Keep a good stack on hand at all times, and put this book to good use" - R. Albert Mohler, Jr.

The Value of Corporate Silence

Mark Dever has a great post on "Making Silence Together" at the 9Marks blog. It is a reflection on the moments of silence during corporate worship and the value they provide. He concludes the post in this way:

"We silence ourselves exactly because God has not kept silent. We silence ourselves in order to hear God speak in His Word (cf. Deut. 27:9) We silence ourselves to show our assent to God's charges against us (cf. Ps. 39:9). We silence ourselves to show respect and obedience and humility and restraint (cf. Zeph. 1:7; I Cor. 14:34; I Tim. 2:12). We silence ourselves to search our hearts (cf. Ps. 4:4).

... Making silence together builds and unifies the church, witnesses to the majesty of God and tacitly proclaims His greatness to all who hear."

An Overview of Puritanism by Mark Dever

I stumbled across an address on the Puritans by Mark Dever given on Reformation Day back in 1999. It is a great historical and theological overview of Puritanism. You can listen to it here.

For good books on the Puritans, I would recommend the following:

Worldly Saints: The Puritans as They Really Were, Leland Ryken

A Quest for Godliness: The Puritan Vision of the Christian Life, J.I. Packer

Meet the Puritans, Joel Beeke and Randall Pederson

The Westminster Directory of Public Worship: Discussed by Mark Dever and Sinclair Ferguson, Mark Dever and Sinclair Ferguson

Of course, Banner of Truth's Puritan Paperbacks are excellent primary sources.
